Compulsory Basic Training

CBT was introduced in December 1990.
If you want to ride a motorcycle on the road you must have a CBT certificate.
The minimum age for CBT is 16 years.
This is a mandatory course of instruction, there is no time limit but it is normally taken over one day that begins in a safe off road area. CBT is not a Test.
There are 5 elements to CBT.
  1. Introduction
  2. Practical on-site training
  3. Practical on-site riding
  4. Practical on-road training
  5. Practical on-road riding

If you are 16 years of age you are limited to a 49cc machine, if you are 17 years or older you can take the CBT on a 125cc machine. After successfully completing the CBT you can ride on the road on your own displaying L plates. You can NOT carry a pillion passenger.

Full Car Licence Holders

A full car licence is also a full moped licence (up to 50cc only) but: If you passed your test after 01/02/01 you must do a CBT to validate your licence.

Theory / Hazard Perception Test

( you do not need a theory test to complete a CBT )

To take a motorcycle test you must first pass a theory and a hazard perception test. The tests are conducted at various centres around the country, these are run by the DSA (driving standards agency). We can book your theory test for you or you can book your own by calling 0870 01 01 372.

The theory test consists of 35 questions, you must answer at least 30 correctly to pass the first part of the test. The second part is the Hazard Perception test, this is 15 short video clips each worth 5 points giving a total possible score of 75. You must score at least 44 points to pass this part of the test. If successful you will be issued a pass certificate.
